The only way to create and maintain a “kind and courageous” team culture is to regularly nurture the trust among team members.
The only way to ensure a foundation of trust within a team is to secure an environment that is safe. There are several ingredients required to secure emotional safety and build trust. One essential ingredient is simply getting to know one another through the simple investment of spending time together.
Thus, the team that I used to lead would have a quarterly team day. Half of the day was working on future direction, strategic planning and building relational skills, while the other half was designed for fun.
This particular team day, half of our time (skill building or fun??) was axe throwing.
